Add the Banana Pi BPI-M4 (Realtek RTD1395) to the realtek-rtd129x family. It boots mainline U-Boot v2026.10 (release) and the current (6.18) and edge (7.3) kernels.

Works:

  • SD card (50 MHz).
  • eMMC (8-bit, 52 MHz, ~42 MB/s read). armbian-install installs to it, and the board boots from it.
  • Ethernet 10/100 (94 Mbit/s each way), with the jack LED and the blue LED below the M.2 slot. Fixed MAC address, derived from the eMMC CID.
  • USB 2.0 host ports.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (RTL8821CU on USB).
  • 4 CPUs, 300 MHz to 1.3 GHz.
  • Thermal throttling and the status LED.
  • HDMI audio: 2 ch LPCM, 32–192 kHz, S16/S32, through the audio firmware (new ALSA driver over the ACPU RPC).
  • HDMI console (1080p60). U-Boot starts the RTD1395 audio firmware, which runs the HDMI output, and hands it a framebuffer as its boot logo. The firmware keeps scanning it out; Linux uses it as a simple-framebuffer.
  • PCIe on the M.2 Key E slot (new host driver). The link trains at Gen1 x1; Gen2 also trains, but stays off as in the BSP. INTx only.

Fixes:

  • Ethernet: ethtool reported an unknown speed on its first read after a link change (latched BMSR link status). Shared with the W2.
  • eMMC: the controller is secure-only after reset. U-Boot opens it to Linux. The SPI loader cannot load U-Boot raw from the eMMC, so eMMC installs get a FAT partition 1 with U-Boot.
  • The vendor loader reports 2 GiB on this 1 GiB board. Most of the upper 1 GiB aliases the lower 1 GiB, so Linux corrupted its memory under load. U-Boot now probes for the alias and uses 1 GiB.
  • PHY driver: the second port of a two-port USB 2.0 PHY used the wrong register address.
  • ACPU RPC: the RTD1395 firmware takes plain physical addresses, not KSEG0/KSEG1 ones.
  • ACPU: the VO device is created only when the DT gives it a scanout pool (W2 unchanged).

Not working yet:

  • HDMI mode changes (fixed 1080p60).
  • PCIe cards with a BAR over 120 KiB. The SoC gives PCIe a 120 KiB CPU window only. A MediaTek MT7925 card enumerates, but mt7925e cannot map its 2 MiB BAR. Realtek Wi-Fi and RTL8125 cards have small BARs and should fit.

Shared family code: the patches touch drivers and the family config that the BPI-W2 also uses. W2 behaviour is meant to stay the same. W2 builds (current and edge DTBs) pass, but the W2 is not retested on hardware.

Tested boards: Banana Pi BPI-M4 (1 GiB).

  • Current 6.18: 10/10 cold boots. Combined stress at 1.3 GHz for 7 minutes, no errors, peak 77.8 °C: 3 GiB SD writes, Ethernet RX and CPU load.
  • Final image (current): HDMI console on a fresh install.
  • Edge 7.3-rc7: installed with dpkg on the current image. The same combined stress passes, peak 75.9 °C.
  • eMMC: armbian-install to a wiped eMMC, then cold boot with the SD card removed.
  • U-Boot v2026.10: boots from eMMC; Ethernet LEDs, fixed MAC and ethtool speed checked.
  • PCIe: link up at Gen1 x1 (Gen2 also trains); an MT7925 card enumerates.

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request adds Banana Pi BPI-M4 support for RTD1395 across board configuration, U-Boot, and Linux kernel patch sets. It adds device-tree support for storage, networking, USB, CPU frequency and thermal management, PCIe, and HDMI audio.

Changes: BPI-M4 platform and RTD1395 support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Board configuration and U-Boot support
config/boards/bananapim4.csc, config/sources/families/realtek-rtd129x.conf, config/kernel/linux-realtek-rtd129x-*.config, patch/u-boot/v2026.10-rtd129x/*
Adds BPI-M4 board metadata, udev interface naming, and kernel selections. The family configuration controls eMMC boot-area image generation and RTD1395 boot-file partition setup. U-Boot adds RTD1395-specific startup, storage, audio-CPU, and Ethernet configuration.

Add RTD1395 support to the current and edge kernels.
The BPI-M4 gets SD card, eMMC, Ethernet, USB, CPU frequency scaling,
thermal throttling, an HDMI console and HDMI audio.

Fixes shared with the BPI-W2:
- USB 2.0 PHY: use the correct register for the second port.
- r8169soc: report the link speed on the first ethtool read.
- r8169soc: reset the RX ring at a slot without a buffer.

Enable the M.2 Key E PCIe slot on the BPI-M4.
The link trains at Gen1 x1. Gen2 also trains, but stays off.
The CPU window is 120 KiB. Devices with a larger BAR do not get it.

Add the RTD1395 and the BPI-M4 to U-Boot.
U-Boot starts the audio firmware and opens the eMMC controller to Linux.
The BPI-M4 gets the Ethernet LEDs and a fixed MAC address.
U-Boot probes the DRAM size: the vendor loader reports 2 GiB on 1 GiB boards.

The RTD1395 SPI loader cannot read U-Boot raw from the eMMC.
It loads U-Boot from FAT partition 1.
Add that partition on eMMC installs and keep U-Boot in it.
RTD1295/RTD1296 boards keep the eMMC boot area.
