What

autoCloseMarkdown no longer adds closing asterisks to text like 这是**中文。**后续文字 (fixes #493). When a * run sits inside a word, the code already leaves it literal. Now, if a later run of the same length shows up right after punctuation (no whitespace in between, no other emphasis opened or closed), that run is left literal too instead of being treated as a new opener.

input before after
这是**中文。**后续文字 这是**中文。**后续文字** unchanged
这是*中文。*后续文字 这是*中文。*后续文字* unchanged
foo**bar.**baz foo**bar.**baz** unchanged
这是**中文。**后续 **more 这是**中文。**后续 **more**** 这是**中文。**后续 **more**

Why

Under CommonMark the two runs can't form emphasis. Both are left-flanking, so they can only open. The second can't close because it comes after punctuation and before a letter, which means it isn't right-flanking. Neither run has a closer, so the parser leaves both as literal text (parseMarkdown returns a single text node). The old healing treated the second run as an opener and closed it at the end of the line. That changed the rendered output and bolded 后续文字. Bold that ends in CJK punctuation is common, so this showed up in normal Chinese text.

A simpler fix would be to never open a run that comes right after punctuation. But that would also stop healing real openers in streamed text like see (**important, so I tie the change to the skipped word-internal run instead. The pairing only applies within the same whitespace-free stretch and at the same frame depth, so foo**bar and (**baz and **outer 这是*中文。*后续 heal the same as before.

Tests: I added cases under "Word-internal markers stay literal" in SPEC/auto-close.md. Without the change, 4 of them fail. I also added a unit test that checks the healed text parses the same as the input. pnpm test (all packages), pnpm lint and pnpm typecheck pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected emphasis handling for word-internal markers followed by punctuation, preventing unmatched markers from altering rendered text.
    • Preserved valid emphasis markers appearing later in text, including after CJK punctuation, parentheses, and other opening punctuation.
    • Improved bold and italic parsing for text containing CJK characters and punctuation, providing more consistent formatting across parsing options.

🟠 new parse test compares the same string with itself · test/auto-close.test.ts:776-777

Correctness · test/auto-close.test.ts:776-777 · in Streaming & Auto-Close

The first test already asserts autoCloseMarkdown(input) === input, so in the second test healed is that same string. The assertion then parses one string twice and passes whatever autoCloseMarkdown does, so it cannot catch the rounding it is named for.

Fix: Assert the healed text is unchanged and compare the parse of that text with a fixed expected tree, or feed a second input that autoCloseMarkdown does change and assert its parse matches the unhealed tree.

🟠 starSkippedDepth === frames.length lets a frame open and close in between · auto-close/index.ts:581

Correctness · auto-close/index.ts:581 · in Streaming & Auto-Close

The guard fires when only the frame count matches, so any frame pushed and popped between the two runs, such as a code span, still suppresses the later run. The comment on lines 466 to 468 promises no frame opened or closed in between, which the length test does not enforce.

Fix: Count frame mutations instead of comparing lengths: bump a counter or set starSkippedLen = 0 on every frames.push and frames.pop, then compare that snapshot in the guard.

📝 Walkthrough

The auto-close parser now tracks word-internal asterisk runs and their delimiter-stack depth. Matching attached runs after punctuation can remain literal. Specification examples and tests cover CJK punctuation and parsing equivalence.

A run after `(`, `[`, `{` or another opening bracket/quote (`foo**bar(**baz`)
is a valid opener, so it no longer pairs with an earlier word-internal run.

🟡 Minor · Invalidate skipped-run state when an emphasis frame changes. · index.ts:466-470

packages/comark/src/internal/parse/auto-close/index.ts:466-470
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Invalidate skipped-run state when an emphasis frame changes.

For foo**bar(**x**)**baz, the first ** saves depth 0. The (**x**) segment opens and closes an emphasis frame, returning to depth 0. The final ** then matches the saved length and depth, so the code skips it. The current output remains foo**bar(**x**)**baz.

Reset the saved skipped-run state when the emphasis frame opens or closes. The final run then opens a frame and closers produces foo**bar(**x**)**baz**. Keep the existing isOpeningPunct(prev) check so the opening-punctuation case remains unchanged.
